Take a seat.
Raise your chest and chin so that you can breathe easily.
Relax and breathe normally a couple of times without the spirometer.
Inhale deeply. Completely fill your lungs with air, and hold it.
Bring the spirometer to your mouth. If you do this too fast the turbine would start early, this can be avoided if you bring it in from the side.
Tightly seal your lips AROUND the mouthpiece.
Be careful not to cover the hole with your tongue or your teeth.
Blow as hard and as fast as you can.
Keep going until you have completely emptied your lungs.
Rest for a bit and catch your breath before doing the next test.

Lung age is computed in accordance to the 1985 paper by J. F. Morris and W.Temple.
Reference [Spirometric "lung age" estimation for motivating smoking cessation.](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/4070195/)
When obstruction is observed, its severity is computed according to ATS/ERS standards (table 6 in the reference below).
When restriction is observed, its severity is computed as:
- 60% ≤ FVC PERCENT PREDICTED < 80% → MILD RESTRICTION
- 50% ≤ FVC PERCENT PREDICTED < 60% → MODERATE RESTRICTION
- FVC PERCENT PREDICTED < 50% → SEVERE RESTRICTION

A - EXCELLENT
At least 3 acceptable maneuvers.
For adults, top-two FVC and FEV1 from such maneuvers are within 150 mL.
For children aged 2-6, top-two FVC and FEV1 from such maneuvers are within 100 mL or 10% of the highest result (whichever is greater).
B - VERY GOOD
At least 2 acceptable maneuvers.
For adults, FVC and FEV1 from such maneuvers are within 150 mL.
For children aged 2-6, FVC and FEV1 from such maneuvers are within 100 mL or 10% of the highest result (whichever is greater).
C - GOOD
At least 2 acceptable maneuvers.
For adults, FVC and FEV1 from such maneuvers are within 200 mL.
For children aged 2-6, FVC and FEV1 from such maneuvers are within 150 mL or 10% of the highest result (whichever is greater).
D - POOR
At least 2 acceptable maneuvers.
For adults, FVC and FEV1 from such maneuvers are within 250 mL.
For children aged 2-6, FVC and FEV1 from such maneuvers are within 200 mL or 10% of the highest result (whichever is greater).
E - VERY POOR
